Objective

Students learn about the teachings of an ancient Chinese philosopher.

Directions

Introduce students to the teachings of Confucius. Tell them that Confucius believed in good relationships between people and values such as family, tradition, and mutual respect. Confucius believed that humans could shape their own destiny, and ordinary people could become sages.
Distribute to students copies of the Translating Confucius activity sheet. Have them translate each of the teachings listed into their own words. Each student will select one quote as the basis of an oral presentation that he or she will give to the class. In their presentations, students will explain the meanings of one of Confucius' teachings and describe its importance to life today.
